The next morning after breakfast, Wolf made his way to Dalling House. It was a beautiful spring day. The sun was shining, and the trees and flowers were blooming, but none of the beauty could erase the memory of last night and the sight of Taylor assaulting Mercy. He knew if George had not been there to pull him off the scoundrel, he might have killed him; his rage was nearly out of control. He had not felt like that since the war when the Frenchman had sliced open Jonathanâs face, but even a duke could not get away with killing a peer.
After a short walk, Kentworth opened the door as Wolf climbed the stairs to Dalling House. âGood morning, Your Grace.â
âIâm here to see Lady Dalling and Lady Collin if they are available.â
âThey are in Lady Dallingâs sitting room, Your Grace. Please follow me.â
Wolf followed the butler up the stairs, but he really wanted to run and find out if Mercy had recovered from her ordeal. He was sure Kentworth had witnessed Mercyâs state of undress last night, but he didnât know if the butler knew the details. Servants had a way of finding out things that still astounded Wolf. If you need some information, the servants would probably know the answer.
At the top of the stairs, they turned right. At the second door, Kentworth knocked once before announcing Wolf. âThe Duke of Wiltshire.â
Wolf walked in, and Kentworth closed the door behind him. He saw the ladies all seated having tea. They rose and curtseyed. âGood morning, Your Grace,â Eleanor said.
âYour Grace, would you care for some tea,â Marian asked.
âYes. Thank you.â
Marian looked at Mercy. âMy dear, will you pour for His Grace?â
Mercy nodded and gave Wolf a shy smile. âHow do you like your tea, Your Grace?â
âA splash of milk.â
Mercy prepared the cup and handed it to Wolf. âYour Grace, I cannot thankââ
Wolf held up his hand as he stared at Mercyâs bruised lips. It infuriated him to think that any gentleman would treat her so badly. There were dark circles under her eyes, indicating she had not slept well either. He had tossed and turned most of the night as well.
âLady Mercy, there is no need to thank me. Iâm glad I was there in your hour of need,â he said as their fingers brushed against one another.
Wolf longed to pull her into his arms again to soothe any hurt and, most of all, because he liked the feel of her in his arms. Against his better judgment and earlier proclamation that he was not looking for a wife this Season, something about Mercy had him thinking that perhaps it was time he took a wife. She was so unlike any other young lady he had met, and he found himself drawn to her more and more each day.
The ladies drank their tea while Wolf took the chair beside the sofa.
âSpeaking of last night, have you heard anything about the incidence?â Marian asked.
âNot as of yet. I have a few sources that will inform me if any rumors start racing through the ton.
